Limiting Leadership Beliefs: How Do You Move Past Them?

Limiting Leadership Beliefs: How Do You Move Past Them?

What are limiting leadership beliefs?

They are the entrenched ideas we hold about ourselves and about leadership, which narrow our horizon and limit our possibilities. Things like: “a leader must always be serious,” or “I can’t be both liked and respected at the same time.”

What clients tell me: “I’ve started accommodating other people’s expectations and acting in ways that please them, to the point that I no longer lead in my own way.”

How do you know a belief is limiting you?

You force yourself to follow the prevailing pattern despite feeling out of sync with it; you’ve stopped being curious and exploring within your own leadership domain; you’re afraid of looking “unprofessional” if you’re yourself; you judge parts of your own personality as “flaws” that must be hidden.

How do you move past them?

I help clients accept what some might call “odd” or unexpected in them, so they come to see it as a strength and an asset that serves them. Simplicity, humor, and honesty create entirely new possibilities and choices.

A practical step: in coaching sessions, we analyze the situations where you felt weak or frustrated to reach the belief underneath them, then explore together whether it’s a fact or a constraint you chose for yourself.
